Southwest Education’s Progressive Language Acquisition –

an ELL Instructional Model

The SW Progressive Language Acquisition Model was developed to help ELL students learn a language not just to pass a test on Friday, but to acquire the language for life.

Regardless of grade-level or the age of the students, ELL students are at various levels of language acquisition when they enter a school for the first time. Therefore, after 25 years of educational teaching, research-study and observation, the SW Progressive Language Acquisition Model was developed focusing on nine steps.

  1. Language Assessment
  2. Learning Modality Review
  3. Phonemic Awareness Instruction
  4. Vocabulary Development
  5. Language Acquisition Instruction
  6. Language Development
  7. Content-Curriculum Instruction
  8. Cultural Awareness Instruction
  9. State Mandated-Test Instruction

Besides preparing ELL teachers, one of the many challenges administrators face is identifying the right educational programs that support teachers and improve student performance.
